Understanding Muharram: A Guide to Explain to Children

As we embark on the new Hijri year, it is a wonderful opportunity to connect with our children and share the significance of Muharram. We want to provide simple information so that we can talk to our children about the sacred months, Muharram and the day of Ashura.

Muslims have a slightly different calendar from the ones typically used in schools, which might interest our children. The Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar where it is based on the phases of the moon. This is why you might notice our months move from year to year.

The Sacred Months

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar. It is the Muslim’s new year. It is also one of the four sacred months in Islam, as mentioned in the Quran:

“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve months in the register of Allah from the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred.” (Quran 9:36)

During the sacred months, sins in these months are taken more seriously, and good deeds bring a greater reward. Therefore, Muslims are encouraged to refrain from sin and increase their good deeds during these months.

The four sacred months are Muharram, Rajab, Dhul-Qi`dah, and Dhul-Hijjah.

Why is Muharram Important?

The month of Muharram is a very special month as it is the month to be called the ‘month of Allah‘. It is a good idea to fast during this month like what the Prophet used to do.

The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said:

“The best prayer after the prescribed prayers is a prayer offered in the middle of the night. The best fast after the month of Ramadan is fasting in the month of Allah, al-Muharram.” (Sahih Muslim)

Fasting during Muharram, especially on Ashura, expiates sins of the past year. Encourage your children to fast, even for a part of the day, to instil a sense of devotion and spirituality.

The Day of Ashura

The day of Ashura is the 10th day of Muharram. It is special day for Muslims. The Prophet SAW and his Companions used to fast on this day.

“Fasting the day of `Ashura’, I hope that Allah will accept it as expiation for the previous year.” (Sahih Muslim)

It was also on this day that Allah helped save Prophet Musa (AS) and his people from the Pharoah. Prophet Musa also used to fast on this day, giving thanks to Allah.

MashaAllah how amazing is that?

As parents, explaining these events can help our children understand the importance of standing up for what is right and the virtues of patience and sacrifice.

How to Talk to Your Children About Muharram

  1. Use Simple Language:
    • Break down the concepts into simple, relatable terms. Explain that Muharram is a special time to be kind, generous, and to avoid bad behaviour.
  2. Share Stories:
    • Narrate the stories of Prophet Musa (AS) and Prophet Nuh (AS).People say that Prophet Musa split the sea on the day of Ashura, and that Prophet Nuh’s ark came to rest on Mount Judiyy during this time. Use storytelling to make these historical events engaging and memorable.
  3. Engage in Activities:
    • Involve your children in crafts related to Ashura, such as creating a Hajj landscape or drawing scenes from the stories.
  4. Encourage Reflection:
    • Ask your children how they feel about the stories and what lessons they can learn. Discuss the importance of standing up for justice and being patient in difficult times.

Fun Activities for Muharram

  • Craft Projects:
    • Create artwork depicting the events of Ashura.
  • Storytime:
    • Read children’s books about the prophets and the significance of Ashura.
  • Fasting Together:
    • If appropriate, encourage your child to fast for a short period and explain the spiritual benefits.

Muharram is a sacred month that offers valuable lessons in faith, sacrifice, and reflection. By engaging our children in learning about this important time, we help them develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of their faith. Let us guide our children with compassion and wisdom, ensuring they grow up as knowledgeable and devout Muslims.
